Working with ADAPT & Making Waves

Rhiannon Williams joined Exim last Summer as an ADAPT dancer. Since then she has taken on a more responsibility with the group often leading sessions and supporting the younger members of the company. Having recently finished University Rhiannon has also been offered a position as an Apprentice Dance Practitioner with our Making Waves project. Read all about her experience so far:

IMG_4422In June 2015 I was asked by Claire Summers to join and support Exim’s youth company ADAPT, a wonderful group of mixed ability dancers that meet once a week and who completely lighten up my Friday afternoons. Working with ADAPT has given me the opportunity to take part in 2 hour length sessions starting with; a 1 hour class that focuses on warming up and learning phrases followed by, 1 hour working on a choreographic piece that the group creates and performs at multiple platforms across Plymouth.

IMG_6831Having been with ADAPT for a year now I have seen a huge progression in mine and the groups confidence and enjoyment for dance since performing on the Theatre Royal Stage as part of U.Dance 2015. They are actively every session pushing through new limits, together they have learnt how to adapt movements to suit their bodies, are able to input on creative decisions and recognise that each individual has something to offer/ bring to the group that can improve their dancing and build their confidence. With ADAPT each session is different, whether that be a different number of dancers that attend each week or switching from one performance piece to another, the group have taken ownership of the word ‘ADAPT’ and have grown to take on any challenge they may be given. I absolutely love working with ADAPT, they are a special group of young people who always make me feel welcome to the space and the relationship they have built together, they would be the same with anyone who would want to come and take part so make sure you pop in and say hello!

image 5In addition to my work with ADAPT, I have been successful in receiving a Trainee Practitioner job on Exim’s new community project ‘Making Waves’. ‘Making Waves’ is a new project by Exim Dance in collaboration with Plymouth University that will reach out to schools across the South West to encourage, inspire and excite young people about going to university. This is an extremely exciting project for me to be a part of as I will be co-teaching alongside talented practitioners that can physically, in action, help improve my confidence with teaching a mix of age groups. Having newly finished my final year at Plymouth University and my Dance Leadership Level 2 qualification with Exim Dance, it has been fantastic to have been given the opportunity to move straight into paid work and find myself at the start of a professional career thanks to Exim Dance and Plymouth University.
