Hello Exim followers,
2016 has been a very rememberable jam packed year for the company. With over fifteen weekly term classes/projects delivered each week and Etch Exim’s latest touring work being presented throughout the UK, we can certainly say we are in need of the Christmas holiday break!
I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge warm thank you for the continued support Exim receives on a daily basis we couldn’t do any of this without you!
I wanted to share just a handful of the things we’ve been up to as well as looking forward to some new adventures that will commence in 2017.
Exim’s newest youth project Making Waves began in September 2016 and is worked in partnership with Plymouth University, Devon Community Outreach Network, Real Ideas Organisations, University of St Mark & St Johns and Plymouth College of Art. Exim has been delivering secondary School workshops to promote dance in higher education and we have set up weekly dance sessions that have seen twenty young people from various schools in Plymouth join. The dancers recently performed a short performance to parents at Plymouth University and are very much looking forward to performing at Plymouth University & City College at the start of the new year as well as working with Fotonow to make a dance film. Due to the funding received for Making Waves it has enabled in total nine graduates and current Plymouth university students in training to be employed by the company to provide them with, training, support and teaching experience. Exim has taught a subtotal of 258 students linked to the project from September 2016.
ADAPT Youth Company have had an incredible 2016 they have recently worked with Bristol based visual artist Megan Broadmeadow, Plymouth Dance and Plymouth Arts Centre to create a film that was projected on Plymouth Arts Centre as part of the Illuminate Festival and were involved in the city parade. The youth company have been working with artist Meier Willams to design the new performance costumes that are based around the theme circus! The youth company is excited about up and coming performances in the new year and can’t wait to share a foreign dance exchange project with you all in 2017!
Exim’s current professional touring work Etch choreographed by Claire Summers has been presented in four venues to date Cygnet Theatre Exeter, Taunton School, National Star Centre Cheltenham and Helford Theatre Truro College. The team is now on a short break until they go back into rehearsals with Adam Benjamin and hit the road again with the first 2017 tour date at Exeter Phoenix on the 20th February. As well as Exim presenting the work at each of the above venues we have had youth curtain raisers from local youth dance companies from the surrounding areas, colleges students and dancers presenting own work alongside.
New Team and a Sad Farewell
2016 has seen four new members join the Exim team Lucy Freeman – Lead Community Dance Practitioner, Robert Mennear – Lead Community Dance Practitioner, Rachel Banham – Tour Booker & Education Outreach Officer and also Miranda Howard who is the new Finance Manager. We have sadly said goodbye to Co – Founder of Exim Claire Summers who has just embarked on a new adventure of travelling the world and teaching English in a number of different countries as well as her travel blogging. We wish Claire all the best even though she doesn’t need it with her next chapter of work and we know she will be sadly missed from the whole dance community within the Southwest. If you want to keep up to date with her adventures follow her here..
