Is it really April already with Easter just around the corner?! Wow 2017 is sure flying by! Since our last term update six weeks ago Exim Dance Company have been super busy! Heres just a handful of our highlights.
The Etch dancers were back in the studio on the 19th February with mentor Adam Benjamin to work on the piece in preparation for the three tour dates we’ve presented this term at Exeter Phoenix, The Keay St Austell & Barbican Theatre.
Each of the tour dates we’ve had curtain raisers provided from youth dancers from Exeter Youth Dance Company, St Austell BTEC students and Exim’s newest youth project Making Waves. Its been really wonderful that we have been able to have the young dancers on the Etch journey with us and allow them the opportunitys to perform alongside our shows.
“The workshop was amazing and I enjoyed every moment of it”
Student from St Austell College
The work is to be presented just 4 more times this year at the below dates.
- 28th April The Poly | Falmouth Art Centre
- 14th June The House Plymouth
- 31st June & 1st July Fringe TheatreFest Barnstaple

Open Company Class
Over the last two terms our open company classes have been at an all time high with so many people attending. Its been so lovely to see so many of Plymouths dancers together in one space.
We have two more blocks of open company class prepared for you for the summer period!
“Open classes are so valuable and important in the city. It is so brilliant to have a class that is at a challenging and professional level for those in the city that aren’t students (as well as it being brilliant for students) it is so nice to know we have somewhere of quality to go and learn. I have found over the 2 terms I have attended that classes are well taught, varied, challenging but with levels. The music is always chosen well and the range of practitioners is a real quality and variety which allows those taking part to continue to grow and explore different movement types”
Attendee Gemma Ward
ADAPT Youth Company
Adapt Youth Company have had a jam packed term with two sessions with Fotonow making the new youth promo that will be released very soon. The group were also apart of ‘In The Mix‘ Wheelfever Projects yearly platform on the 25 March. The group had such a fantastic day and it was a really special event. It was wonderful that all the dancers performed together at the end of the show with a piece of choreography they all created together on the day.
Making Waves Project
Making Waves weekly dancers opened our Etch performance at the Barbican Theatre on 24th March and we couldn’t of been prouder of them. Its so great to see how much they have developed and matured into the company they now are. The group have just planned what the next performing piece is about and will be presenting it a number of times throughout Cornwall and Devon throughout the summer term. The dancers are working with Meier Williams to create new dance costumes for the piece at present.
24th March Making Waves dance ambassadors Sam and Kaitlyn had a fantastic day delivering workshops to Pilton Community College students. We have lots of Making Waves outreach workshops booked in for after Easter so keep your eyes peeled with our regularly updates.
Lucy Freeman one of Exim’s lead community practitioners has been working with Plymouth School of Creative Arts students and some of Exim’s youth company dancers weekly in her Youth Yoga classes that run on Wednesday’s in term time at our base PSCA.
What Lucy offers in the classes;
The use of yoga postures to build inner and outer strength is the main focus of a yoga class for young people. Incorporating imaginative series of flowing sequences, partner and group poses and age appropriate playful yoga games helps to improve overall strength, flexibility and co-ordination. Balance poses, visualization, breathing exercises and deep relaxation help to bring about overall emotional balance, improved concentration and a sense of calm whilst building a healthy, positive and self-aware relationship to the body.I fundamentally aim to offer tools to be applied within everyday situations.
Active For Life
Our weekly classes for aduts with and without disabilities at Plymouth Life Centre in partnership with Plymouth Guild have seen a staggering amount of people attending and thanks to the high numbers we now have enough funds to ensure the project can run smoothly for the remaining of 2017!
As Exim Dance Company is expanding it means we need more team members to join the journey with us! Today we have released a call out alongside Plymouth Dance as we have two internships vacancies available.
If you would like to join any of our public classes or projects please do get in touch by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 07864168663
While the Exim teaching team take a much deserved break over the Easter holidays its all very exciting behind closed doors as our web designer Ben James is making the company a new website to be live for the new term. We can’t wait for you all to see it!
We look forward to sharing more with you and announcing exciting new projects that we have lined up for our summer term but for now we wish everyone a very Happy Easter.
